Thank you for continuing your support of the Mother of Mercy Free Clinic.  At last count we were serving 138 new Mom and their unborn babies, providing them with testing, prenatal care, birth classes, and the myriad other needs of a pregnant mom.  Dr. Home, our dedicated OB has increased her volunteer time to ensure that all of these ladies get the best care possible.  And two different local girls have taken on the project of providing baby shower baskets—hundreds of them!  This is truly a community work.

How can we help more?  Let’s get more of our community involved in the support of BVM.  Maybe you could forward this to someone you know under the age of 30?  We need to keep them involved in the prolife work in our community—many of them have walked and prayed the Rosary in front of the clinic—now they need to see the good that has come of their prayers and efforts.

Other needs—another OB!  With so many women needing help, Dr. Home’s hours have increased dramatically

A Physical Therapist and/or Chiropractor.  Many of our patients work at physical labor and need care in these areas

$12,000 to cover the cost of in house testing.  A local business who had covered this cost is no longer able to do that.  Being able to test our patients’ ourselves saves so much money in the end.

Thank you for all you do for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

A Mother’s Hope, the pre-natal care aspect of the Mother of Mercy Clinic, is so aptly named.

Within a few months of opening, the volunteers are seeing nearly 60 women!

OB visits, fetal and maternal testing, sonograms, child birth classes, all are being offered to women in a setting of love and generosity. These women, who would otherwise be going to the ER for emergency help, can now receive care to help ensure the health and well being of their unborn children before reaching an acute situation. No longer are they going into labor without any prenatal care, as was the case for so many of them before A Mother’s Hope opened its doors.

Women who might otherwise be tempted to seek out abortion now have another option open to them. The mom from our last update, who was so excited to see her baby’s fingers, continues to be amazed at the miracle of feeling her baby grow within her and has decided to keep the baby.

And because of our relationship with Catholic Charities, so many of these women who are under emotional stress due to their economic situation, can also be referred to Family Services for counseling, and to the Vincent de Paul society for rental help, and to the priests of All Saints for confession and spiritual healing.

Due to various circumstances, many of the Moms are in high risk pregnancies, which necessitates more sophisticated testing. As many as possible are being performed right here in the clinic; in fact, one generous volunteer donated a non stress test machine. This saves thousands of dollars because we no longer have to send women outside the clinic for this.

One pressing need right now, however, is a radiologist who can read a fetal anatomy scan. Please keep this need in your prayers, and reach out to anyone you know who might be able to help.

Truly, every day is a witness to the work of mercy going on right here for our neighbors. Thank you for making this possible!

BVM Members,

Praise God for all his blessings and mercies!  The second half of our clinic is remodeled and has been blessed by our Bishop and is now open for patients!

Monday Jan 14 was an amazing morning at the Clinic—we were blessed to have Bishop Burbidge and several local priests, in addition to many of our volunteers, and lots of the Knights of Columbus (including Grand Knight Karl Anderson) present for the Blessing.

The Knights were there to celebrate the donation of the 1000th sonogram machine; Bishop Burbidge blessed it as well, and those in attendance spoke to the amazing work we can now carry out on behalf of moms and their unborn babies.  Clinic Director Alexandra Luevano spoke of witnessing the first time the machine was used here at Mother of Mercy Clinic:

“I can tell you that it brought tears to my eye as well as to the mom’s to see her baby dancing in her womb for the first time.”

Thank you for your support over the last 13 months—what all of us together have been able to do for those in our community is amazing!  Our BVM donors not only purchased the new space, but also funded the entire renovation.

In just over 13 months we have gone from the clinic being open for 4 hours a week to 36 hours a week.  And our base of 20 volunteers has swelled to over 300.  We are now treating over 600 patients!

Services range from chiropractic and physical therapy, to nutrition counseling, cardiology and diabetic care.  And now with the ultrasound machine we can provide prenatal care for the women who kept coming to our door needing help.

We are able to offer them birth classes, lactation classes, and help with things baby might need after birth.  In addition, all the Catholic Charities adoption services will be moving to the Clinic in Manassas.

This makes the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic the antithesis of an abortion clinic!

All of it comes from our community—from you! You will be blessed for your generosity! Please share the good news with your friends. Our goal is to have 1000 BVM members; together we can continue to reach out to our Neighbor, as Christ asked us to do.

Share this post with them and ask them to visit us here online! In doing so you will help us answer a Mother’s prayer for a healthy newborn.

BVM Members,

Wishing all of you BVM supporters a blessed and joy filled Advent!

We have wonderful news from the Mother of Mercy Clinic – one of the earliest goals, that of providing care for expectant mothers in need – is becoming a reality!

On January 8th, a local obstetrician will begin providing prenatal care for the 12 women who are already being seen at the clinic for routine care. All of their prenatal needs will be addressed, from OB visits to child development and birth classes. We even have a lactation consultant available to assist them.

A huge thank you to the Fr. Veger Council of the Knights of Columbus at St. John the Evangelist in Warrenton for partnering with the BVM Foundation to purchase an ultrasound machine, a critical component of adequate prenatal care. Our hope is to have the ultrasound machine in place before the end of the year.

When the abortion clinic closed a couple of years ago, we all knew there would be women and babies still in need of help – our desire was always to offer them a better choice than abortion. Many, many thanks to all of you who supported us, in particular those who have made this specific need a reality.

Lastly, take a minute to read about the tremendous work done by one dietician volunteer; what a difference one person has been able to make in the lives of our community!

Sincerely,
BVM Foundation Board of Directors

BVM Members,

The Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic invites you to join us on December 4th, 2018 at 7pm in the PAC at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas, Virginia. This event is an opportunity for the clinic to thank the community for their support.

We will also share an update on the past year and a look into the future, which includes providing pre-natal care to continue encouraging life in our community. Please bring anyone who might be interested. You can RSVP at freeclinic@ccda.net.

In less than one year of being open, we have over 187 volunteers who have seen over 425 patients, and the numbers continue to grow. In order to continue it’s growth, we really needs a wider community financial support.

Would you reach out to just one friend this week, and ask them to join you in our mission of healing the vulnerable in our midst?

Simply have them visit bvmtrustfoundation.org/

Recently featured by the Diocese of Arlington, Dr. Scott Ross, deacon at Holy Trinity Parish and director of the Mother of Mercy Clinic discussed how working with patients at the clinic allows him to integrate his ministry as a deacon and his vocation as a doctor.

Take a look!

Or read about it here on the Arlington Catholic Herald: Doctor, deacon, dad: Scott Ross serves at free Manassas clinic

Thank you for joining us as a BVM Foundation Member to do our part to help build a culture of life in our community.

We have some amazing news!  On Monday, July 30th, the BVM Foundation, with the help of your generosity, purchased the office Condo next to the Catholic Charities Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic that used to house AAA Women for Choice.  With the Catholic Charities Clinic growing in its ability to meet a wider range of needs, they are already in need of more space.

This will roughly double the amount of space they have to serve the poor and uninsured in the Manassas, VA area.

And thanks to all of your generosity, we have been able to send a total $86,500 to the Clinic since December.  We are now averaging between $7,500 and $9,000 per month now on a sustainable basis.

We also thought you would be interested in the latest report from the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic Director, Alexandra Luevano.  Thank you for being a part of this amazing local story of redemption:

God does miracles at the Catholic Charities Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic on a daily basis.  Some miracles are bigger than others; I want to share a miracle that has touched my heart and the hearts of many of our volunteers.

On a Monday a few weeks ago, we had a teenage girl come to the clinic with her mother.  They walked into the clinic even though the lights were out and the clinic was technically closed, but they entered because we forgot to lock the door.  The girl was sent here with one purpose, to have an abortion; her pregnancy was due to rape.

The child looked scared and ashamed.  Her hair hung over her face and she didn’t make eye contact, however, after talking to them and explaining the risks of an abortion and how this would affect her for the rest of her life, they agreed to think about it and let us know if they would be interested in getting help for her to have the child.

We worked with Gabriel Project to get them an angel who could provide her with transportation to an appointment at Tepeyac since the mother didn’t drive, should she decide to have the baby.  We also reached out to Catholic Charities Pregnancy and Adoption program for them to meet with the child and parent to discuss options.  Of course we reached out to our faithful Prayer Warriors, to pray for this family and for God to allow them to make the right choice.

Later in the day, the mother and daughter called back and informed us that she was going to have this baby.

It’s been about a couple of months and she continues to come to the clinic.  She came to listen to the diabetic classes we had to improve her nutrition as well as to just keep us updated on what was happening with her.

She is a totally different person than that first time we saw her.  She has a smile that lights up a room and appears to be excited about having this baby.

Thank you for your support because without it this would not have been possible.  May the Lord continue to bless you and your families.

Alexandra Luevano, BSN, RN, CCM

The sole mission of the BVM Foundation is to support the monthly financial needs of the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic.  Our goal is to build a base of 1,000 recurring monthly donors to match the monthly financial needs of the Mother of Mercy Free Clinic.

We are intentionally focusing on the number of members, not the monthly amount, because we also believe want to engage as many people in the community as possible in this effort.  It was the whole community that prayed to shut down the Amethyst Women’s Health Clinic and now it is up to all of in the community to pray for the sustainability of the Mother of Mercy Clinic.

Please share this message with family and friends and ask them to become of the 1,000 new BVM Members.  All they have to do it visitwww.BVMTrustFoundation.org, hit the “Become a Member” button, and offer a recurring monthly donation of any amount.  No amount is too small, and all donations are fully tax deductible.  We are committed to ensuring that 100% of your donations make it to clinic.

May God continue to bless the great work of Alexandra Luevano, Catholic Charities and all of the volunteers at the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic.

Dear BVM Members,

Thank you for your amazing generosity! Only eight (8) months into this journey, and we’re already well over 100 Members strong.   The sole mission of our membership is to support the Catholic Charities Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic, a charitable endeavor that is helping to create a Culture of Life in the site of a former abortion clinic.

We have Members donating between $5.00 and $1,000 per month.  With an average recurring gift of $63.50, we’ve been able to donation $81,500 to the Clinic since November 2017!  That’s an average of more than $10,000 per month.

With our current Membership, we should be able to send an average monthly donation of $8,000 to the Clinic to cover its costs!

But the clinic continues to blossom – beyond our most optimistic expectations – to meet a need that is so great.  To meet this need, the clinic has already nearly doubled the hours for patients, and it has added more wrap-around services to meet their complex medical needs.

These services include on-site access to specialists including cardiologists,  orthopedists, chiropractors, physical therapists and dietitians.  There is even a weekly exercise group now.

As we just heard in today’s gospel from Matthew: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (MT 9:38).  To that end, our goals for this month are two-fold:

Prayer Support!

  • Prayer made this story of redemption possible, and prayer will be our surest path forward.  We want to make sure we never forget that.  So we’re launching a prayer campaign, for the clinic, the volunteers and staff, and the clients.
  • Please prayerfully consider what you can commit to and send your monthly prayer commitment to kmooney@bvmtrustfoundation.org.  We’re hoping to build out a beautiful spiritual bouquet and pass it on to Alexandra Luevano and the incredible volunteers at the Catholic Charities Mother of Mercy Free Clinic.

Members Making Members!

  • The clinic has already seen amazing growth and results, and BVM needs to grow our Members to help sustain this Culture of Life.
  • This month we’re asking every current member to recruit one additional member!  Tell them the story, invite them to read all the materials and even make a visit, and exhort them to become a recurring support member!  Many hands make light work, and there is plenty of work in God’s Vineyard.
  • Remember our web site at www.BVMTrustFoundation.org has the whole story and links to become a Member.

One final thing:  Several of you have asked how you can increase your monthly  donation.

The easiest way to just e-mail Jim Koehr  at jkoehr@BVMTrustFoundation.org, and he can take care of it in the background on your behalf.

As always, thank you for being a part of this amazing local redemption story.  God bless you and keep you.

Thank you for being a part of this amazing local story of redemption!

 Sincerely,
BVM Foundation Board of Directors

BVM Members,

The response to the opening of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington’s (CCDA) Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic in Manassas has been overwhelmingly positive in every regard. From the standing-room-only crowd for the blessing to the enthusiastic embrace by the local community. From the extraordinarily generous financial support provided to help fund its operations to the outpouring of volunteers eager to help treat clients, the clinic has surpassed the most successful scenarios envisioned for its first six months.

The number of poor and uninsured clients seeking basic medical care has been greater than anticipated, also. To address this significant demand, the clinic has nearly doubled the hours for patient appointments while adding wrap-around services to meet their complex medical needs.

This includes on-site access to specialists such as cardiologists, orthopedists, chiro- practors, physical therapists, and dietitians. A group of patients has formed an exercise group that meets weekly to improve health outcomes while strengthening their ties to the local community.

Further, the clinic has been invited by the Virginia Department of Health to participate in SYNC, a continuing education program designed to improve medical care locally. Because many of the patients seeking care have diabetes, the CCDA clinical team will focus on diabetes interventions for their SYNC Capstone Project. Early identification of the onset of the disease is vital to treat and prevent multiple chronic conditions in this high-risk population. Doing so will lead to improved self-care and reduce diabetes- related complications.

The good news is that the patients who are receiving care at the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic are seeing significant improvements in their health in just a few visits. Volunteer Medical Director Dr. Scott Ross has remarked at how extraordinary this has been in his more than 20 years of experience.

“Typically, when treating a patient for a chronic disease, a physician will write a prescription and improvement will be incremental at best,” Dr. Ross shared. “You might try something else and they will get a little bit better. For patients we are seeing here at the clinic, their conditions are improving dramatically.

“They have many statistical reasons not to do well, but that it not the case. Maybe it is having medical care for the first time in a while, maybe patient motivation, maybe the support of the clinic staff, maybe prayer . . . I can’t really explain it. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

To some, this may sound like a miracle. At a place named in honor of the Blessed Mother, perhaps we should expect miracles here more often.

BVM Members,

Thank you for joining us as a BVM Foundation Member to do our part to help build a culture of life in our community. Thanks to all of your generosity, we were able to send another $8,000 to the Clinic this month.

Here are some interesting statistics that I received from Catholic Charities CEO Art Bennett on number of people the Clinic has served so far.

As you all know, the plan is to ramp up slowly so the operation does not get overwhelmed, but even a slow ramp-up has results in a whole lot of people being served:

Unduplicated patients (visits): 235 ~ Total number of visits: 563

We also thought you would be interested in the latest report from the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic Director, Alexandra Luevano.  Thank you for being a part of this amazing local story of redemption:

Thanks to more physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals volunteering with Catholic Charities, we have been very busy at the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic.  The kindness, support, and prayers of our donors, volunteers and parishes, have allowed the clinic to continue to improve and provide our clients with expanded medical services.

It has been wonderful to see how the clinic continues to grow, with over 200 patients now registered.  Because of the large demand for services and the increased resources we are able to increase our hours of having physicians see patients at the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic on Wednesdays and with specialists coming in on other days.  We couldn’t do this without the generous donation of time by our physicians. We are so excited about the specialists we have onsite; cardiology, orthopedics, dietician and physical therapy.  We have added a orthopedist and a second cardiologist.  Our clients have benefited tremendously from being referred to these providers.

We also have new providers who are able to see patients in their offices. During the month of March, we partnered with a dentist who is able to see patients.  In addition, there is an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, an allergist, and a podiatrist who are also able to see clients. Finally, a urologist is able to see a patient based on need, and is also hoping to start coming to the clinic to see patients.  We are so blessed to have so many physicians come into the Mother of Mercy Free Clinic network.

Also, we started a nutrition and exercise program.  We have about 8 -10 clients regularly attend.  This has been extremely helpful to our clients as they have been able to make lifestyle changes, lose weight, and build a sense of community.  They are meeting an hour prior to the class to walk together.

In March, we had several parents come seeking medical care for their children, two with lung problems and one with a neurological disease.  Since we are not able to see children at this time, we are working with the parents to refer them to UVA for medical assistance.

Other programs at Catholic Charities allow us to provide wrap around services for the whole person.  We continued to work with Catholic Charities St. Lucy’s Project to help our patients who do not have immediate access to food.  We have also referred several patients to Catholic Charities Family Services for mental health needs. A woman who is illiterate and recently moved to the area came to the clinic with a need for obstetric services and we referred her to Tepeyac.  However, she didn’t have anyone who could attend her appointment with her and assist her with interpreter services.  We worked with Gabriel Project who was able to provide her with an interpreter for appointments.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers and consider making it official through our volunteer opportunity for Prayer Warriors. Remember us when you see your physicians and consider asking them if they would be interested in volunteering at the clinic or seeing a patient pro bono in their office.

As Pope Francis stated, “In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ.” Thank you for allowing us to provide God’s love and service to those in need. May the Lord continue to bless you and your families!

The mission of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington is to show Christ’s love by bringing transformative services to those most in need in our diocese. A key component of our mission is the Mother of Mercy Free Clinic, which seeks to provide health care services for more than 8,000 people who have no insurance in the Manassas and Manassas Park area.

The clinic opened on December 6 and in the past three weeks we were able to serve 60 patients and provide referrals to over 200 clients with complicated needs and financial struggles. In addition to providing medical treatment, we supported each patient holistically by providing resources to address individual needs. All this was made possible through God’s grace and the wonderful hearts of all those who donate their time, talent, and treasure to see God’s plan put into action.

Since we kept the same phone number as the abortion clinic, we talked to several women interested in terminating their pregnancies. We provided them with support, showed them the love of Christ, and referred those interested to additional help.

We were able to care for a woman with previous abortions at the clinic who now was seeking medical assistance. She had some reservations about coming into the clinic, but left in tears with gratefulness for the services she received and the kindness with which she was treated. She was referred to All Saints for guidance on returning to the faith.

We worked with a woman who was in need of housing and was interested in giving up her baby for adoption. She was referred to Catholic Charities Pregnancy and Adoption Support Program, which is working with her to get her prenatal care and housing.

We have seen firsthand the tremendous need in our community. A pregnant woman with six children has been struggling with domestic abuse, severe financial burdens, personal depression, and the depression of her teenage daughter. We referred her to obtain prenatal care and other appropriate services through Catholic Charities and All Saints.

We are also helping many people who call seeking resources out of our service area, by guiding them to support in other parts of Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC.

As St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “Faith in action is Love. Love in action is Service.” Thank you for providing the financial and spiritual support needed to see God’s love make a tangible impact in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ!

For more information on referring clients, donating resources, and referring health providers and others to volunteer, please contact Alexandra Luevano at aluevano@ccda.net.

Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!
